Why iSeries?

The industry's only true multi-environment server

With the new iSeries, you'll have the flexibility to run virtually any technology you need, whenever you need it. Each server in the line is enabled for multiple operating environments, so you don't have to limit yourself in choosing the hardware and software that best suit the realities of your business.

Integration: With OS/400, IBM pioneered integration design concepts. Thanks to its incorporation of Microsoft Windows integration and support for Linux, the iSeries has extended the boundaries of integration beyond a single server and operating system to multiple operating environments.

Virtualization: The first essential iSeries building blocks toward virtualization were built-in virtualization of system resources and dynamic workload management. Next came OS/400 support for Dynamic Logical Partitioning (LPAR) and multiple "virtual blades" or images of Linux and Windows-based applications. Now, fully dynamic enabling of reserve Capacity on Demand underscores iSeries leadership in virtualization.

Open standards: iSeries is designed with open standards in mind. No other system enables such a diverse set of operating systems and applications. This commitment to open standards is highly evident in the iSeries implementation of Linux. Linux enables customers to manage new, open-infrastructure solutions inside logical partitions and storage management frameworks on the iSeries. IBM eServer iSeries is well recognized as a technology leader in the Linux community, previously winning Best of Show at LinuxWorld.

Autonomic computing: OS/400 is built on architectural foundations that include self-optimizing disk management and the ability to automatically dial up for service in anticipation of a failure. As iSeries has grown in performance and versatility, its autonomic features have been extended to include Dynamic Logical Partitioning for efficient resource utilization and single network sign-on through Enterprise Identity Mapping (EIM). These features, and others, help iSeries deliver return on investment measurable in weeks rather than years, as with many competitive systems.
